Vocabulary N° 12

1. Crust: Earth´s solid, rocky surface containing the continents and ocean floor.

  • By earthquakes and volcanoes eruptions people can feel the crust moving.
2. Original Horizontality: The idea that many kinds of rocks form in flat, horizontal layers.

  • The original horizontaly layers are the young, medium and the oldest one.

 3. Continental Drift: The idea that a supercontinent split apart into pieces, the continents, which drifted in time to their present locations.

  • The continental drift was called Pangea.

4. Sea-floor spreading: The idea that new crust is forming at ridges in the sea floor, spreading apart the crust on either side of the ridges.

  • There is many sea floor spreading in Hawaii.

5. Magma: Hot,molten rock below Earth´s surface.

  • There is many magma in Hawaii.

6. Plate Tectonics: The idea that Earth´s surface is broken into plates that move.

  • The plate tectonics move around the mantle.
7. Mantle: Earth´s layer beneath the crust.

  • Mantle is a part of a rocky body large by density.
8. Subduction: Where plates collide, the sliding of a denser ocean plate under
